Why ants are such a Gold Coast problem
Our subtropical climate keeps ants active 12 months a year. Where southern states see colonies slow down in winter, the Gold Coast stays warm and humid enough for foraging, breeding, and new colony formation right through July and August. Most homes never get a real break from ant pressure.
Coastal suburbs feel it most. Mermaid Beach, Palm Beach, Currumbin, and Burleigh Heads — sandy soils, warm paving, and properties close to the dunes — are textbook habitat for coastal brown and Argentine ants. Bushland-edge homes around Gilston, Mudgeeraba, and Worongary deal with green-head ants and the occasional Singapore ant intrusion.
Standard entry points are predictable: weep holes, gaps under sliding doors, paving cracks beside the house, slab expansion joints, and any gap where pipes or cables pass through external walls. Once a foraging trail is established, ants follow chemical pheromone tracks back and forth — which is why supermarket sprays usually make the problem worse.
Common ants we treat in the Gold Coast
Different species need different approaches. Coastal brown ants take gel readily. Argentine ants form super-colonies that need wider perimeter work. Singapore ants need urgent attention for safety reasons. Identifying the species is the first job on every ant call we attend.
Coastal brown ant (Pheidole megacephala)
The most common ant in Gold Coast homes — also called the big-headed ant. Workers are tiny (1.5–2 mm), light yellow-brown, and trail in long lines across kitchen benches and around pet bowls. Soldiers have noticeably larger heads, hence the name. They nest under paving, in garden beds, and inside wall cavities. Coastal brown ants displace native species and can dominate an entire property within a season. Highly responsive to gel baits.
Black house ant (Ochetellus glaber)
Small (2.5–3 mm), shiny black, fast-moving — the ant most people picture when they hear "ant problem". Common in kitchens and pantries, attracted to sweet foods and dropped pet biscuits. They nest in soil, under rocks, and in roof voids. Persistent rather than destructive — they don't bite seriously and don't damage structures, but they're relentless once they've found food. Standard gel and perimeter treatment handles them well.
Argentine ant (Linepithema humile)
Light to medium brown, around 2–3 mm, but the defining feature is colony structure. Argentine ants form super-colonies with multiple queens and millions of workers spanning entire streets. Standard perimeter sprays often fail because the colony shifts entry points. Listed as one of the world's worst invasive species. Wider perimeter work and non-repellent baits are essential — repellent products make Argentine ant problems significantly worse.
Singapore ant (Trichomyrmex destructor)
Small (1.5–3 mm), dark brown to black with a paler abdomen. Notable for one reason: they chew electrical insulation. Singapore ants are linked to power point shorts, appliance failures, and house fires. We've found them inside switchboards, behind dishwashers, and chewing cable sheathing in roof voids. They also have a painful sting. If you've spotted small dark ants around power points, get them identified — this isn't a DIY job, and ignoring them carries genuine property risk.
Green-head ant (Rhytidoponera metallica)
Medium-sized (5–6 mm), metallic dark green or purple, mainly found in gardens, lawns, and bushland edges. Single-nest species rather than colony-formers, but the sting is the issue — sharp, painful, and capable of triggering severe allergic reactions in sensitive people. Responsible for most "ant sting at the cricket" stories on the Gold Coast. Treated with targeted nest-direct dust where possible, plus surrounding lawn treatment.
Signs you have an ant problem
- Visible ant trails along benchtops, walls, skirting boards, or windowsills
- Ants swarming around food, pet bowls, sugar containers, or fruit
- Small mounds of fine dirt or sand pushed up between paving cracks or along path edges
- Ants entering through weep holes, door frames, or window seals
- Recurring ant problems despite repeated DIY spraying
- Painful stings in the garden or on the lawn (green-head ants)
- Ants around power points or appliances — concerning, possible Singapore ants
Our ant treatment process — step by step
Effective ant control requires colony elimination, not just killing the foragers you can see. Here's exactly what we do:
- Step 1 — Inspection and identification. Walk-through identifying active trails, entry points, and nest sites. We confirm the species — different ants need different products and placement.
- Step 2 — Treatment plan. Clear plan covering what we're treating, where, and what to expect over the next 1 to 3 weeks. We also flag attractants worth fixing — uncovered pet food, leaking taps, food residue around bins, garden mulch piled against the house.
- Step 3 — Internal treatment. Strategic placement of non-repellent gel baits along trails and entry points — kitchen, pantry, bathroom, laundry. Gels are placed in tucked-away spots out of reach of pets and kids. Trails are not sprayed with repellent products — that's what causes colony budding.
- Step 4 — External treatment. The more important treatment. Non-repellent residual to the building perimeter, weep holes, paving cracks, garden edges, fence lines, and visible nest sites. Ants pick up the active ingredient walking through the band and carry it back to the colony before symptoms appear.
Treatments we use and safety
All ant products we use are registered with the Australian Pesticides and Veterinary Medicines Authority (APVMA) and applied by a licensed technician (QLD Pest Management Licence PMT 1005380615). Our standard approach uses non-repellent transfer-effect products — ants don't detect them as a threat, walk through them, carry the residue back to the colony, and pass it through trophallaxis (food sharing) to the queens and brood. Colonies collapse from the inside.
Pets and kids stay out of treated areas during the short re-entry window (around 2 hours, until surfaces are dry). Internal gels are placed where pets and small kids physically cannot reach. For ant identification background, the CSIRO ants research and resources are a useful reference.
How much does ant control cost on the Gold Coast?
Standalone ant treatments on the Gold Coast typically range from $180 to $250, including identification, internal gel, and external perimeter. Pricing depends on:
- Property size — a unit costs less than a four-bedroom home with extensive paving
- Species involved — Argentine and Singapore ants take more product and time
- Whether the issue is internal trails, external nests, or both
- Severity and number of active entry points
Ant treatment is included as part of our general pest control package, which covers cockroaches, ants, and spiders in a single visit and usually works out cheaper if you're dealing with more than one pest. Commercial premises and multi-unit buildings are quoted on inspection. Request a free quote here or call 0416 986 095.
DIY surface spray vs professional gel and bait — what works
Most homes try a supermarket spray first. Here's why it usually backfires:
| Factor | DIY surface spray | Professional gel and non-repellent bait |
|---|---|---|
| What it kills | Foragers on contact only | Workers, brood, and queens via colony transfer |
| Effect on the colony | Surviving ants split into satellite colonies (budding) — problem doubles | Whole colony collapses from the inside |
| Return rate | Trails return within 2–4 weeks, often from new entry points | Colony eliminated; reinvasion seasonal at most |
| Safety in food prep areas | Direct surface spray on benchtops and skirting | Gels placed in voids and hinges; non-repellent residual outside only |
| Cost over 12 months | $60–$150 in repeat sprays, problem ongoing | $180–$250 once, included in general pest packages |

Frequently asked questions
How much does ant control cost on the Gold Coast?
Standalone ant treatments typically run $180 to $250, depending on property size and species. Ant treatment is also included in our general pest control package — usually cheaper if you're dealing with cockroaches or spiders too. Free quotes — call 0416 986 095.
Why does supermarket ant spray make the problem worse?
Most supermarket sprays are repellent — they kill on contact but signal danger to the rest of the colony. Surviving ants split into multiple sub-colonies (budding), so within weeks you have ants entering from twice as many points. Professional treatments use non-repellent products that ants carry back before realising anything is wrong.
How long does ant treatment take to work?
Ant numbers usually drop within 3 to 5 days as workers carry the treatment back to the nest. Full colony elimination takes 1 to 3 weeks. Coastal brown and black house ants are typically faster; Singapore ants and large super-colonies take longer.
What's the most common ant on the Gold Coast?
Coastal brown ants (Pheidole megacephala) — also called big-headed ants. The small light-brown ants you see trailing across kitchen benches and along paving cracks. Found in well over half the Gold Coast residential ant jobs we attend.
Are Singapore ants really dangerous to wiring?
Yes. Singapore ants chew through electrical insulation and have been linked to power point shorts, appliance failures, and house fires. If you've spotted small dark ants with a paler abdomen around power points, get them identified and treated quickly — this is one species where DIY isn't appropriate.
Are ant treatments safe around pets and kids?
Yes. APVMA-registered gels and non-repellent residuals applied to ant trails, entry points, and external perimeters — not surfaces the family contacts. Short re-entry window (around 2 hours, until surfaces are dry). Gel baits go in tucked-away spots.
Why do I keep getting ants every summer?
The Gold Coast climate keeps ants active year-round, but warmer humid weather drives a forage push from December to March. Heavy rain forces ground-nesting colonies indoors. Ongoing seasonal protection through a general pest control program prevents the cycle.
Do you treat ants outside as well as inside?
Yes — and it's the more important treatment. Ants nest outside and enter the home looking for food. Treating only the inside trails kills foragers but leaves the colony intact. Standard treatment includes external perimeter, paving cracks, garden edges, weep holes, and any visible nest sites.
