Pest Control FAQ

Everything you need to know about pest control on the Gold Coast — from pricing and safety to end-of-lease requirements and specific pest advice.

Pest Control Questions, Straight Answers

Honest answers to the questions Gold Coast and Tweed customers ask us most. Can't find what you need? Call 0416 986 095 — we'll answer in plain English.

This is the FAQ page for Maison Pest Control — a family-run pest control operation servicing the Gold Coast, Tweed Heads and Northern NSW. We've grouped 30 of the most common questions into six categories below: pricing, safety, treatment effectiveness, booking, end of lease, and specific pests. Every answer is based on what we actually do on jobs across the Gold Coast, not generic copy. We're fully licensed (QLD PMT 1005380615 and NSW), carry $5M public liability insurance, and we're rated 5.0 on Google by every customer who's reviewed us.

Pricing & Quotes

A standard general pest treatment on the Gold Coast typically runs $149–$280 depending on property size and inclusions. A 1–2 bedroom unit sits at the lower end; a 4–5 bedroom house is at the top. End of lease packages with combined flea and general spray run $140–$230. Specialist work like rodent baiting, bed bug treatment or German cockroach jobs is quoted separately. The quote is always free.

Two reasons usually. First, the cheap operator may not be using genuine APVMA-registered residual products — supermarket-grade chemicals don't last and you'll be re-treating in two months. Second, the cheap quote often skips the parts of the property that matter (roof void, sub-floor, external perimeter, garage). Get a written quote that lists the areas treated and products used. If a quote seems too good to be true, it usually is.

Yes — quotes are always free, with no obligation. For most residential jobs we can quote over the phone in a couple of minutes if you tell us property size and what you need treated. For commercial work and larger properties, we'll come out for a free site inspection. Call 0416 986 095 or use the contact form.

No call-out fees anywhere in our service area. Whether you're in Coomera, Coolangatta, Mudgeeraba or Murwillumbah, the price quoted is the price you pay. The full Gold Coast and Tweed service area is included in our standard pricing.

Show us a written quote from another licensed Gold Coast pest control operator (not a handyman, not someone unlicensed) and we'll do our best to match or beat it. We won't undercut a price that's clearly below cost — that's how dodgy treatments happen — but we're happy to work with you on a fair number.

Cash, credit card (Visa and Mastercard), and bank transfer. For commercial clients on scheduled servicing we invoice with 14-day terms. Payment is due on completion for residential jobs unless otherwise agreed.

Safety — Pets, Children & Food

Yes, when applied by a licensed technician using APVMA-registered products. Once the spray has dried (usually 1–2 hours), the property is safe for pets to return. We ask that pets are kept off treated surfaces while wet and out of treated rooms during application. Lower-toxicity options are available on request — just mention it when booking.

Yes. The same APVMA-registered products that are safe for pets are safe for children once dried. Keep kids out of treated rooms during application and off treated surfaces while still wet. Wipe down kitchen benches and food prep areas before re-using if any spray landed there. We use lower-toxicity options as standard in childcare environments and homes with infants.

1–2 hours for most internal treatments — basically until the spray has dried to touch. External treatments are safe to walk past immediately. Heavier treatments like bed bug or flea work may have a longer settling window — your technician will give you the all-clear before leaving.

Yes. Cover or put away exposed food, dishes on benches, pet bowls, and any baby items in rooms being treated. Anything inside cupboards is fine — we don't spray inside cupboards directly. We'll tell you on arrival what to move; takes five minutes.

Yes — every product we use is registered with the Australian Pesticides and Veterinary Medicines Authority (APVMA). We're also fully licensed (QLD PMT 1005380615 and NSW) and carry $5M public liability insurance. Safety Data Sheets (SDS) are available on request for any product we apply.

Fish, birds and reptiles are more sensitive to pesticide aerosols than mammals. Cover fish tanks and turn off air pumps for the duration of the treatment and 2 hours afterwards. Move bird cages and small reptile enclosures into an untreated room or outside if possible. If you have a tank or cage that can't be moved, mention it when booking and we'll plan around it.

If spray landed on a kitchen benchtop or food prep surface (we try to avoid this but mention it if it happens), give it a wipe with warm soapy water before using it for food. We don't routinely treat benchtops, so for most homes there's nothing to wash. Mopping floors aggressively in the first two weeks after treatment will reduce the residual effect — give it a sweep and only spot-mop where needed.

Treatment & Effectiveness

A standard general pest treatment has a residual life of around 6 months. In practice this means most Gold Coast homes stay on top of pests for 6–12 months after treatment, depending on weather, property condition and how aggressive cleaning has been. We back our work with a 6-month warranty on most general treatments.

For most Gold Coast homes, an annual general pest treatment is the right baseline. Properties near bushland, in older suburbs, with a lot of garden, near canals, or with previous infestations benefit from twice-yearly servicing. The Gold Coast's subtropical climate keeps cockroaches, ants and spiders breeding year-round, so the gap between treatments is shorter than it would be in cooler parts of Australia.

For general pests like cockroaches, ants, spiders and silverfish — yes, one treatment usually does the job and the residual product keeps working for 6 months. For German cockroach infestations, fleas, bed bugs and rodents, one treatment is rarely enough — these need a multi-stage protocol with follow-up visits. We'll be upfront when quoting if your job needs more than one visit.

It's normal to see more pest activity for the first 7–14 days after treatment, not less. The residual product flushes pests out of harbourages so they crawl across treated surfaces and pick up a lethal dose. By week three, activity should drop sharply. If you're still seeing serious activity at the 4-week mark, call us — that's what the warranty is for.

We come back and re-treat at no charge. Most general pest treatments include a 6-month warranty against the pests we treated. The warranty doesn't cover pests we didn't treat (e.g. rodents on a general spray job), or new pest pressure from neighbours. Just call us and we'll book a free re-spray.

Yes — roof void treatment is included in our standard general pest spray on most properties. The roof void is where roof rats nest, where many spiders shelter, and where cockroach harbourages develop. We use a granulated dust application appropriate for the void rather than wet spray.

Yes if the property has sub-floor access and active pest pressure (Queenslanders, older homes on stumps, properties with historical termite activity). Sub-floor treatment is normally an external perimeter and dusting job rather than a wet spray. If your property has a sub-floor we'll inspect during the visit and treat where needed.

Booking & Service

Same-day or next-day for most Gold Coast suburbs if you call before lunchtime. Saturday bookings available. Vacate-day end of lease jobs we try to fit in same-day where possible — call early. Hinterland and Northern NSW jobs may run to 1–2 day lead time. Get a quote or call 0416 986 095.

Yes — same-day service is usually available for most central Gold Coast suburbs (Southport, Surfers Paradise, Broadbeach, Robina, Burleigh) if you call before midday. Same-day for outer suburbs depends on schedule. We'll always tell you straight up when we can be on site.

If you're anywhere on the Gold Coast or in Northern NSW (Tweed Heads through to Murwillumbah), almost certainly yes. We have 47 suburb pages covering our standard service area. If your suburb isn't listed there, call us — we still cover most surrounding areas at no extra cost.

Yes — we hold a New South Wales pest control licence in addition to our Queensland licence. All work in Tweed Heads, Banora Point, Kingscliff, Cabarita Beach, Murwillumbah and the rest of Northern NSW is fully licensed and insured. Coolangatta to Tweed Heads is a five-minute drive for us.

For a standard general spray: every internal room (skirtings, behind appliances, inside cupboards), kitchen and laundry, external perimeter of the building, eaves, garage, garden beds, outbuildings, and the roof void. Sub-floor areas are treated where access permits and there's active pest pressure.

Yes. You don't need to leave, but stay out of rooms being actively sprayed for the 5–10 minutes the technician is in there. Once the spray has dried (1–2 hours), the whole house is back to normal. If anyone in the household has respiratory issues we can plan the treatment around their schedule.

A standard general pest treatment or end of lease job takes 45–90 minutes for most Gold Coast homes. 1–2 bedroom unit: about 45 minutes. 4-bedroom house with garage and garden: 90 minutes. Specialist jobs like bed bug treatment or German cockroach work take longer and may need follow-up visits.

End of Lease & Rentals

Almost always yes if your lease allowed pets — most Queensland leases include a clause requiring professional flea treatment at vacate. Many leases require a general pest spray regardless of pet ownership. The Residential Tenancies Authority backs the agent's right to require it. Without a valid pest receipt, agents can withhold part of your bond. Our end of lease pest control packages start from $140.

Only if it's from a licensed pest controller. The receipt has to include licensed technician name and licence number, property address, treatment date, products used, and areas treated. DIY flea bombs or supermarket sprays don't qualify because there's no licensed technician on the receipt. Our receipts include all required details and are accepted by every Gold Coast and Tweed agency we've worked with.

After. Steam cleaning agitates flea pupae out of the carpet fibres — they emerge as adults shortly afterwards, which is exactly when the residual flea spray needs to be in place. Carpet should be touch-dry, not bone dry. Most Gold Coast bond cleaners book carpet steam in the morning and pest control in the afternoon on the same day. We coordinate this with bond cleaners across the coast routinely.

Honestly, no — and you should be wary of any pest controller who claims to. Bond return depends on the entire vacate condition (cleaning, carpets, walls, gardens, etc.), not just the pest treatment. What we guarantee is that the pest treatment itself will be done by a licensed technician with a receipt that satisfies the lease requirement. The pest component is the easiest part of the vacate to get right.

Specific Pests

No — we don't do termite work. Termite treatment requires a separate timber pest licence and we hold a general pest licence only. We're upfront about this rather than taking on work we shouldn't. If you have suspected termite activity, get a licensed timber pest specialist out for an inspection — happy to refer you to operators we trust on the Gold Coast if you call.

Wasps yes, bees rarely. Wasp nests (paper wasps, mud-daubers, European wasps) are treated as a separate call-out and usually done same-day or next-day given the safety risk — common on commercial premises and around children's play areas. For honey bees we generally recommend calling a local beekeeper to remove the swarm intact — bees are more valuable alive than dead. If a bee colony is established somewhere it can't be safely removed, we can treat it.

Almost always one of two things. Either you've got German cockroaches (small light-brown ones, usually in kitchens) — these need a gel bait protocol on top of the surface spray, not just spray on its own. Or you're in an older property with a major harbourage somewhere we haven't reached (sub-floor, roof void cavity). German cockroach treatment is a different job from the general spray — we'll quote separately if active infestation is found.

Flea bites are usually on ankles and lower legs, smaller, with a single red dot in the centre. Bed bug bites tend to appear on areas exposed during sleep (arms, back, neck) and often come in lines or clusters of 3 — sometimes called 'breakfast, lunch, dinner'. Bed bug bites can take 2–14 days to show up, so the bites might not match the night you got bitten. If you're unsure, take a look at our bed bug page for the inspection protocol.

No. Huntsmen are large and confronting but they're not medically significant — bites are extremely rare and the venom won't hurt a healthy adult. They actually help keep the cockroach population down. Most Gold Coast pest controllers (including us) treat them as part of the general spider treatment because clients want them gone, not because they're a threat. The genuinely dangerous spider on the Gold Coast is the redback — small, black, red stripe on the abdomen, found in sheds, garages, outdoor furniture and gardens.
