European wasps vs native paper wasps — know what you're dealing with

Paper wasps (Polistes species)

Nests usually range from golf-ball to saucer size. Paper wasps aren't especially aggressive away from the nest, but they defend it hard, and their favourite spots — doorways, entertaining areas, letterboxes — are exactly where people brush past them.

European wasps (Vespula germanica)

Far more aggressive and a genuine problem wasp. European wasps build large, enclosed nests — often hidden in wall cavities, roof voids, retaining walls, compost bins, or underground — that can grow to hold thousands of workers. Unlike paper wasps they'll sting with little provocation, they scavenge around food and drinks (a real danger around outdoor dining and bins), and they sting repeatedly. If you're seeing steady wasp traffic disappearing into a single hole in a wall, the ground, or a roofline, treat it as a European wasp nest, keep clear, and get a technician onto it — this is not a job for a can of spray.

Mud wasps (mud daubers)

Mud wasps build small tubular nests out of mud, tucked under eaves, in sheds and garages, and on external walls. They're mostly solitary and far less aggressive, but the nests are unsightly and often mistaken for something worse. We remove them and clear the mud tubes as part of the job.
